History of Shillong / History in Shillong


Shillong the capital of Meghalaya was a tiny village till 1864. After 1864 it was accorded the status of the new civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills. During the colonial period, it was an integral part of the erstwhile British provincial state of Assam and served as the capital even after independence.


It was the summer capital of Eastern Bengal for several years. The lovely hill station was hit by a massive earthquake which damaged the city in 1897. After Meghalaya attained Statehood, Shillong served as the capital of the new administration.


Shillong takes its name from the peak of the same name. There are several legends related with its name. Some says that There was a handsome youth named 'Shyllong', who was born to a virgin human mother in Bisi, a village located near Shillong. It is said that he was none other than the Shillong deity


Shillong Tourist Attractions


The popular hill city of Shillong is a treat for the sore eyes. Unique natural beauty, pleasant climate, the hide and seek game of the clouds with the elegant Pine trees, cascading waterfalls with their sensuous appeal during steamy monsoon season are some of the unique features of the Scotland of Orient.


Golf Club :
One of the most attractive points in Shillong is undoubtedly the Golf Club. The Golf Course at the end of the city's lower tier surrounded by Pine Forest. It was developed in 1889 with 9 holes & in 1924 it was made a 18 holes Golf-Course. This the second largest in  Asia & is called Gleneagle of the East.


Ward Lake :
In the heart of the city is Ward Lake, an artificial lake along- with its garden developed in 1893- 94 by the Chief Commissioner of  Assam, Sir William Ward. There is an island in this jigzag shaped lake. A wooden bridge helps for to and fro journey between the island & main-land. There is an arrangement for Joy ride in lake. The Botanical Garden and the Governor House shaded by pine trees are added attraction of the Ward lake.
